1. Messier 49
SC 2 / 50 seconds / 2020-05-21 / 01:29 There are two nice, smaller galaxies just below the Messier 49 annotation. The rightmost is PGC 41107 and the leftmost (and slightly higher) is PGC 41130.
2. Messier 60
G / 90 seconds / 2019-06-02 / 07:31:03 UTC You can see another galaxy in this photo, but it is pretty dim. The leader-line on the Messier 60 has two sections. If you follow the one that points right at Messier 60, down about as long as that segment of the leader-line, you will see PGC 42846 at mag 15.9
3. Messier 61
SC 2/ 50 Seconds / 2020-04-30 / 00:15 The bright star to the right and slightly higher than Messier 61 is SAO 119344. [SAO 119344 / Messier 61 / Star Unit Ratio = 53,333]
4. Messier 66
SC 2 / 50 seconds / 2020-05-18 / 01:31 The frame shows two thirds of the famous Leo Triplet. The missing component is NGC 3628. It would like directly above Messier 66 if the FOV was larger. The star near the top right of Messier 66 is SAO 99560. [SAO 99560 / Messier 66 / Star Unit Ratio = 17,814]
5. Messier 86
W / 90 seconds / 2019-06-27 / 08:41:46 These galaxies are part of a collection called Markarian’s Chain. There is another galaxy just adjacent to Messier 86, at about 5 o’clock. It is PGC 40659. The two are nearly equidistant from our solar system.
6. Messier 87
W / 90 Seconds / 2019-06-27 / 08:44:30 UTC This photo shows a section of what is called the Virgo Cluster. The bright star directly below Messier 87 is SAO 100134. [SAO 110134 / Messier 87 / Star Unit Ratio = 91,667]
7. Messier 100
W / 90 Seconds / 2019-07-28 / 08:45:12 UTC As these things go, the galaxies featured in this photo are relatively close to our solar system. Messier 100 is 52 million light years away, and NGC 4328 is 30 million light years away.
8. NGC 5846
SC 2 / 50 seconds / 2020-05-18 / 02:23 NGC 5846 is 80 million light years from our solar system, while NGC 5839 is 73 million light years out. Near neighbors!
9. NGC 5490
SC 2 / 50 seconds / 2020-05-17 / 04:28 If you think of IC 983 as the center of a clock face, you can see a bright star at about 8 o’clock. That is SAO 100899. [SAO 100899 / IC 983 / Star Unit Ratio = 270,000]
10.NGC 5434
SC 2 / 50 seconds / 2020-05-18 / 01:36 The bright star in the upper right corner is HR 5270. [HR 5270 / NGC 5434 / Star Unit Ratio = 298,701]
11. NGC 5280
SC 2 / 50 seconds / 2020-05-17 / 04:38 If you look closely at the upper left corner of the frame, there is a nice, tiny, edge on galaxy. It is PGC 1890556, at mag 16.6, the very edge of this scope’s limiting magnitude.
12. NGC 5171
SC 2 / 50 seconds / 2020-05-17 / 04:33 The large bright star just above the NGC 5178 annotation is SAO 100591. [SAO 100591 / NGC 5178 / 348,837]
13. NGC 4065
SC 2 / 50 seconds / 2020-05-19 / 02:03 The bright star in the middle of the frame on the left is SAO 82124. [SAO 82124 / NGC 4065 / Star Unit Ratio = 272,727]
14. NGC 4005
SC 2 / 50 seconds / 2020-05-19 / 02:40 There is a nice little string going up and right from NGC 4005 (also NGC 4007), to the star SAO 82077, and on the the galaxy NGC 4000 (also UGC 6949).
15. NGC 3801
SC 2 / 50 seconds / 2020-05-19 / 02:08 Oh no! Elon Musk and his SpaceX corporation are planning to launch a massive fleet of communications satellites. The first satellites that were launched had reflective surfaces that worried astronomers, both professional and amateur. I suspect one of these satellites is what caused the zipper-like line that runs across much of the top of the frame.
16. NGC 4565
C 3 / 2020-03-29 / 21:41 / 50 SECONDS For a 50 second exposure, this photo of NGC 4565 is really quite handsome! It rightfully has a place the in AL Flat Galaxy Observing Program.
17. Messier 106
SC 2 / 50 seconds / 2020-05-21 / 01:29 This is one of my favorites in this collection. The bright star above and to the left of the “M” in the Messier 106 annotation is SAO 44141. [SAO 44141 / Messier 106 / Star Unit Ratio = 78,616]
18. UGC 9521
SC 2 / 50 seconds / 2020-05-21 / 01:58 The bright star below the “52” in the PGC 52747 annotation is SAO 101208. [SAO 101208 / PGC 52788 / Star Unit Ratio = 605,634]
19. NGC 5754
SC 2 / 50 seconds / 2020-05-21 / 01:53 If you look just below the “N” in the NGC 5752 annotation, you can make out two galaxies. I have checked this several times, but I believe that they are PGC 2133199 (upper right) and PGC 2132969. If so, that would be pretty amazing — SC 2 is a half meter scope, and the mags of these galaxies are 17.3 and 18.9 respectively.
20. NGC 5714
SC 2 /50 seconds / 2020-05-21 / 01:49 This is not a very good photo, but it does show off the flat galaxy NGC 5714, which is a part of the AL’s Flat Galaxy program.
21. IC 4349
SC 2 / 50 seconds / 2020-05-21 / 01:24 From PGC 215031 to to about 5 o’clock and you will see a smudge and a couple of spots of light. That is a gaggle of galaxies — four in number: PGC 49505, 49502, 49499, and 49507.
22. NGC 6211
C 3 / 50 seconds / 2020-05-21 / 21:46 The bright star near the top of the frame, above the “NGC” of the NGC 6213 annotation is SAO 30041. [SAO 30041 / NGC 6213 / Star Unit Ratio = 658,537]
23. NGC 6338
C 3 / 50 seconds / 2020-05-21 / 21:48 One othe galaxy in the frame, just above NGC 6338, is PGC 59943.
24. NGC 6472
C 3 / 50 seconds / 2020-05-21 / 21:54 Just to the left and down a bit from from NGC 6463, you can make out the edge on galaxy NGC 6471.
25. NGC 3607
C 3 / 50 seconds / 2020-05-21 / 22:03 If you look carefully you can see a smudge, or “faint fuzzy” to the lower right of NGC 3608. It is PGC 34407.
26. IC 696
C 3 / 50 seconds / 2020-05-21 / 21:58 The edge on galaxy just to the right of IC 696 is UGC 6475.
27. NGC 2998
C 3 / 50 seconds / 2020-05-21 / 23:33 There is a nice galaxy gaggle adjacent to NGC 3009, up and to the left. It includes NGC 3010 A, B and C, UGC 7253, and PGC 3461099. All their mags are higher than about 15.
28. NGC 3158
C 3 / 50 seconds / 2020-05-21 / 23:28 An example of magnitude differences: NGC 3158 is mag 11.8; NGC 3159 is mag 15.5; NCG 3161 is mag 15.2.
29. NGC 2943
C 3 / 50 seconds / 2020-05-21 / 23:38 You can make out a galaxy adjacent to NGC 2934 at about seven o’clock. It is PGC 27470 at mag 15.
30. NGC 2804
C 3 / 50 seconds / 2020-05-21 / 23:43 Another error on my part. NGC 2806 is not a galaxy; it is a multiple star. So, I need another galaxy, I suppose. See the two stars that sit vertically between the leader-lines for NGC 2809 and NGC 2804? Star hop from the top star up and to the right at about 1 o’clock. The do one more hop in the same direction. That dot is galaxy PGC 86792.
