Lunar II — Photos for Imaging Certification
In 2021 the Astronomical League began a new program — the Master Imager Observing Award. It requires the observer to complete 10 AL imaging programs, 5 from required categories and 5 from any other imagining programs. One of the required categories focuses on Lunar imaging.
Some time ago I completed the Lunar II observing program; it required the observer to submit several sketches of Lunar features. In some cases, I submitted photos for the required sketches. I was awarded the “visual” version of Lunar II. But for Lunar II to be used in the Lunar category of Master Observer, one must have earned the “imaging” version of Lunar II.
After consultation with the coordinator of the Lunar II program, it was agreed that I could supplement my visual version of Lunar II with a series of images — one for each observation for which I had previously submitted as a sketch. This supplement would allow me to earn an imagining version of Lunar II that would satisfy the Lunar category of the Master Imager program. Here is a listing (with Lunar II assignment numbers) of the sketches I am herewith replacing with images:
- 1, 2, & 3 — Sketch a Full Moon and label all maria, prominent craters, and major rays.
Sketch these targets:
- 71 — Any polar crater (above 80N latitude or below 80S latitude)
- 72 & 73 — Clavius & its internal craterlets
- 74 — Davy Y
- 75 — Delaunay
- 76 — Mare Crisium
- 77 — Messier, Messier A & rays
- 78 & 79 — Montes Jura (counts as 2 OBSV: #78 & #79)
- 80 — Müller and craterlet chains
- 81 — Thebit, Thebit A & Thebit L
- 82 — Vallis Alpes
- 84 & 85 — Create sketches or images that depict libration
- 86 — Sketch or image a close conjunction of Moon and bright star or planet
